How the Math Works

Your Databricks bill has two components that this calculator estimates separately:

1. Databricks Platform Cost (DBU Charges)

DBUs per node per hour x number of nodes x hours per day x workdays per month x DBU rate = monthly Databricks cost

Example: 2.0 DBU/hr x 3 nodes x 8 hrs x 22 days x $0.15/DBU = $158.40/mo

2. Cloud Infrastructure Cost (VM Charges)

Hourly VM rate x number of nodes x hours per day x workdays per month = monthly cloud cost

Example: $0.312/hr x 3 nodes x 8 hrs x 22 days = $164.74/mo (before spot discount)

Total Monthly Cost

Databricks platform cost + Cloud infrastructure cost = Total

Example: $158.40 + $164.74 = $323.14/mo

This calculator uses representative instance pricing. Actual cloud VM costs depend on your specific instance types, region, and pricing agreements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this Databricks cost calculator?
This calculator provides estimates based on published DBU rates and typical cloud instance costs. Actual costs vary based on your specific instance types, data transfer, storage, and any negotiated discounts. Use these estimates as a starting point for budgeting, then refine with your Databricks account team.
Does this include storage costs?
No. This calculator estimates compute costs only (Databricks DBU charges plus cloud VM costs). Storage costs for Delta Lake tables, notebooks, and ML artifacts are separate and depend on your data volume. Cloud storage typically adds 5% to 15% on top of compute costs.
How do spot instances affect my estimate?
Spot instances reduce the cloud infrastructure portion of your bill by approximately 60% to 70%. The Databricks DBU charges remain the same regardless of whether you use spot or on-demand instances. Spot instances can be reclaimed by the cloud provider, so they are best suited for batch jobs and worker nodes.
